(NEW YORK, April 9, 2002) - Lambda Legal Executive Director Kevin M. Cathcart offers a view from the courthouse for Pridefest’s National Gay & Lesbian Leaders Symposium.
From assisting partners of lesbian and gay victims of September 11, to securing protections against anti-gay abuse in the schools, Cathcart will highlight how Lambda Legal ’s advocacy advances civil rights for lesbians, gay men, bisexuals, the transgendered, and people with HIV and AIDS.
“When we improve LGBT legal protections, we improve life for all kids, all families, all communities,” said Cathcart, who for 10 years has led the premier legal organization dedicated to LGBT civil rights. “I am honored to have the chance to share Lambda Legal’s experiences with this liberation movement and vision for its future,” he added. Joining Cathcart at the symposium will be other LGBT organization leaders, including Ingrid Duran, president and CEO of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute, Lorri Jean, executive director of the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, and Michael Duffy, co-chair of the Board of Directors of the Human Rights Campaign. Moderating the event will be Marty Moss-Coane, host of NPR’s Radio Times. Pridefest is the nation’s largest annual LGBT symposium and festival, held annually in Philadelphia. It features a week of more than 60 programs and social events with participation from over 50 regional, national, and international organizations. This year it also includes panel discussions about healthcare, religion, and LGBT life in South Africa, as well as a cabaret with comedian Marga Gomez. Lambda Legal has its headquarters in New York, and regional offices in Los Angeles, Chicago, Atlanta, and later this year, also in Dallas.
