Update on 6/18/2020: Signatures have been delivered to the Department of Health and Human Services as of 4pm Eastern. But you can still add your name to tell the Trump administration to #StopTheRule!

Last Friday, the Trump administration published a rule that seeks to roll back and weaken anti-discrimination protections for LGBTQ people, women, disabled people, people with limited English proficiency, and anyone else in need of health care. The rule creates uncertainty for patients, health care workers, doctors, hospitals, and insurance companies that receive federal funding. It invites discrimination.

This rule DOES NOT and CANNOT change the law. But it is enough to cause confusion and hurt our communities.

Section 1557 of the Affordable Care Act was created to protect vulnerable populations who are often turned away by providers, leading many to not even seek medical care when they need it. Transgender people and people of color in particular already face elevated rates of discrimination in health care. Over the years, Lambda Legal has filed dozens of lawsuits and briefs and heard countless stories of health care discrimination.

This rule change — a particularly heartless act during the COVID-19 pandemic — serves no other purpose than to target and discriminate against vulnerable communities. The cruelty is the point.

On Thursday, June 18th, Lambda Legal and partners will deliver these signatures right to the doorstep of the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). Add your name to tell HHS Secretary Alex Azar and the Trump administration: Stop the rule, our health care is not optional!
