The very first words of the First Amendment state that the government can't say any religion is more important than another. Since the founding of the United States, freedom of religion has been a core constitutional right. But some American lawmakers aren't content with the rights that are enshrined in our Constitution.

They've introduced so-called "religious freedom" bills in Congress and in states across the country, which prioritize some people's religious objections over others' individual rights.

Religion is No Excuse for Discrimination

No one wants to deny people the ability to worship as they choose. The problem is when people use religious doctrine to harm others.

A baker, doctor, or marriage clerk refusing to provide a service to same-sex couples is refusing to respect the rights of a constitutionally protected class of people. That's not only wrong — it's often against the law.
