Lambda Legal Insists on a Complete Count and Respect for Democratic Institutions

(New York, NY, November 4, 2020) – Lambda Legal CEO Kevin Jennings today issued the following statement in response to yesterday’s inconclusive presidential election:

“The foundation of American democracy is that every vote counts. Lambda Legal urges that we honor that tradition and that an orderly and accurate count of all the ballots submitted is completed. The idea that some votes should not be counted is anathema to us as an organization dedicated to upholding the rule of law and American democratic values. We denounce any and all efforts to interrupt the vote-counting process until the full result of the election and the will of the American people is known.”

“As a country, we find ourselves today in unprecedented territory. Due to the nature in which many cast their votes—with a record number of Americans voting early and choosing to exercise their right to vote by mail—it is reasonable for us to be patient and allow the democratic process to take place. Counting all votes is democracy at work, and it is illegitimate to think that some votes count more than others. Every vote counts and every vote must be counted.”
