"Reaching 40 is quite a milestone. At Lambda Legal, we feel strong and vibrant, and we're working to make change every day."

"In 1973, when Lambda Legal opened its doors, I couldn't imagine the world we live in today, filled with LGBT pride and visibility, rights, laws and amazing progress. Lambda Legal had a leading role in shaping this new world, and I am so proud to be a part of it."

(New York, January 14, 2013) - This year Lambda Legal celebrates its 40th year of making change for LGBT people and people living with HIV. Lambda Legal issued the following statement from Kevin Cathcart, Executive Director of Lambda Legal:

"Reaching 40 is quite a milestone. At Lambda Legal, we feel strong and vibrant, and we're working to make change every day.

"In 1973, when Lambda Legal opened its doors, I couldn't imagine the world we live in today, filled with LGBT pride and visibility, rights, laws and amazing progress. Lambda Legal had a leading role in shaping this new world, and I am so proud to be a part of it.

"In one of our first cases, we successfully helped a gay student group at the University of New Hampshire fight a ban on their school activities. And in 2003, in the historic case Lawrence v. Texas, we persuaded the U.S. Supreme Court to overturn all remaining state sodomy laws. That decision fundamentally changed the legal landscape and is the most important legal victory to date for LGBT equality.

"Despite our progress, LGBT people still face discrimination, violence and sometimes tragedy in their lives. We are fighting for the rights of LGBT people and people with HIV across the country - in fact, Lambda Legal is currently litigating over 70 cases, responding to 500 Legal Help Desk calls a month and providing educational programs and information to help people protect their rights.

"To those who were part of this work 40 years ago - happy anniversary to you, and thank you for your leadership and tenacity! To those who have joined this movement more recently - the future is in our hands. We're making the case for equality - and we're not giving up until equality is achieved for all."
