Maryland Court Recognizes Out-of-State Marriage of Same-Sex Couple Represented by Lambda Legal and NCLR

(Annapolis, MD May 18, 2012)—Lambda Legal and the National Center for Lesbian Rights applaud a ruling today by the Maryland Court of Appeals, the highest court in the state, granting a divorce to a same-sex couple, Virginia Cowan and Jessica Port, who were married outside of Maryland. The 7-0 unanimous ruling declares that married same-sex couples are entitled to divorce under Maryland law.

Lambda Legal Urges New York High Court to Reject Felony Charge Based on HIV Status

(New York, April 25, 2012) - Lambda Legal has filed a friend-of-the-court brief in the New York Court of Appeals urging the Court to drop the aggravated assault charge leveled at a criminal defendant based on his HIV status.

"The last time I checked, being HIV-positive is not a crime," said Scott Schoettes, HIV Project Director at Lambda Legal. "And a person should not face criminal punishment - or, as in this case, significantly enhanced penalties - simply because he or she happens to be living with HIV."
