(New York, January 15, 2014) - Today, Lambda Legal announced it has hired Jael Humphrey as staff attorney in its national headquarters in New York.

At Lambda Legal, Humphrey will focus on the legal needs of people of color, immigrants and members of low-income communities who are LGBT and/or living with HIV.  In this capacity, she will expand Lambda Legal's work addressing the legal needs of LGBT and HIV-affected people who identify across intersecting lines of race, ethnicity and socio-economic class through litigation, public education and policy advocacy.

"I am eager to focus my efforts on challenging practices and public policies that discriminate across lines of sexual orientation, gender identity, HIV, class and race," Humphrey said. "I am honored to be a part of this work, and am especially excited to develop and expand our efforts on behalf of LGBT people of color and those living with HIV."

Before joining Lambda Legal, Humphrey worked as a litigation associate at Debevoise & Plimpton LLP.  As part of her active pro bono practice, Humphrey represented LGBT and HIV-positive clients in family court and in immigration deportation proceedings.  During the 2012 election, Humphrey was Director of the Voter Protection State Hotline for Organizing for America Florida.  Prior to law school, Humphrey worked for the Center for Human Rights Legal Action and the Network in Solidarity with the People of Guatemala.

"Jael has impressive legal experience and a powerful commitment to furthering civil rights. We are very excited to welcome her to Lambda Legal," said Jon W. Davidson, Legal Director of Lambda Legal. "We are fortunate to have such a talented litigator and civil rights advocate join our team to advance Lambda Legal's crucially important intersectional work."

Humphrey received her JD from Yale Law School and her Masters in International Relations from Yale Graduate School of Arts & Sciences.  She served as executive editor for the Yale Human Rights and Development Law Journal, cultural affairs co-chair of the Black Law Student Association, and on the national board of directors for Law Students for Reproductive Justice.  After law school, Humphrey served as a law clerk to Judge J. Paul Oetken in the U.S. District Court in the Southern District of New York and then to Judge Lorna G. Schofield also in the Southern District of New York.
