"The questions we have developed seek to draw out Judge Roberts's judicial philosophy in areas critical to LGBT civil rights"
August 22, 2005

(New York, August 22, 2005) — Today Lambda Legal launched a petition campaign seeking signatures of concerned citizens to deliver to senators urging them to ask Judge John Roberts 30 law-based questions about LGBT civil rights during the confirmation hearings that will begin after Labor Day.

“As an organization we have worked in this area of law for over 30 years,” said Jon Davidson, Legal Director of Lambda Legal. “The questions we have developed seek to draw out Judge Roberts’s judicial philosophy in areas critical to LGBT civil rights.”

The gathered signatures and 30 law-based questions will be hand-delivered to senators on the Judiciary Committee.

The 30 questions fall into ten categories:

  • Equal Protection (Romer v. Evans)
  • Right to Liberty (Lawrence v. Texas)
  • Right to Privacy
  • Federalism
  • Disability Discrimination
  • Gender Discrimination
  • Separation of Church and State
  • Congress’s Power to Strip Federal Courts of Authority
  • Precedent
  • Approach to Constitutional Interpretation

The petition and questions are available on Lambda Legal’s website. Visit http://ga4.org/campaign/courtingjustice_robertsquestions.

“We are urging the LGBT community to visit our website and sign the petition and tell a friend and a neighbor to sign up as well,” said Davidson. “An appointment to the U.S Supreme Court is a lifetime position and will affect the law and how we live our lives for generations to come.”
