Matthew Roberts to host interactive forums in Des Moines, Iowa City, and Cedar Rapids
April 16, 2001

(CHICAGO, April 16, 2001) — A three-day speak out in key Iowa cities will raise questions about anti-gay discrimination in employment, Boy Scouts, and adoption by lesbian and gay parents.

Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund’s Midwest Regional Director Matthew W. Roberts will address these and more concerns with “Isn’t That Against the Law?,” an interactive forum on civil rights law for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender (lgbt) and HIV-related communities.

On Tuesday, May 1, Roberts will first speak in Des Moines at the Gay and Lesbian Resource Center of Central Iowa, and on Wednesday, May 2, he will speak at the Iowa City Public Library. The last forum will take place Thursday, May 3, at the Cedar Rapids Public Library.

“I am thrilled to visit a state whose motto, ‘our liberties we prize and our rights we will maintain’, so closely resonates with Lambda’s work,” said Roberts. He added, “This trip will lay the foundation for furthering Lambda’s work in the state.”

“Isn’t That Against the Law?” will tackle issues from employment and HIV-related discrimination, to adoption rights for same-sex couples, to dissociation from discrimination by the Boy Scouts of America, and to first amendment rights. These forums will allow people to share their concerns about discrimination and to strategize on how to protect civil rights for everyone.

Based in Chicago, Roberts is responsible for guiding Lambda’s education, outreach, and development work in Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Ohio, and Wisconsin.

The forum in Des Moines is sponsored by the Gay and Lesbian Resource Center of Central Iowa. The forum in Iowa City is sponsored by GraDyke, the Iowa City LGBT Pride Committee, the University of Iowa LGBT Staff and Faculty Association, the University of Iowa Office of Affirmative Action, the Women’s Resource and Action Center, and the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender Union. The Gay & Lesbian Resource Center of Cedar Rapids is sponsoring the forum in Cedar Rapids.

With its headquarters in New York and regional offices in Los Angeles, Chicago, and Atlanta, Lambda is the oldest and largest legal organization dedicated to the civil rights of lesbians, gay men, and people with HIV and AIDS.
