Gay Dad Wins Big Victory to Continue Unrestricted Visits with His Kids

(NEW YORK, December 18, 1998) -- Maryland's highest court Friday made an important ruling that the best interest of children with a lesbian or gay parent requires that the children have unrestricted contact with their gay parent unless evidence establishes that such contact causes demonstrable harm, said Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund.

Oregon Ruling Is Unprecedented Victory for Gay Civil Rights

(LOS ANGELES, December 10, 1998) -- Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund said Thursday that an Oregon appellate court decision ordering that employment benefits be given to both married and same-sex couples is historic, and has great potential to advance a big array of lesbian and gay civil rights in the state.

HIV Insurance Caps Violate Americans with Disabilities Act

(CHICAGO, December 3, 1998) -- A federal judge ruled that drastic restrictions on Mutual of Omaha's coverage for HIV- and AIDS-related medical expenses are illegal under the Americans with Disabilities Act, Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund and AIDS Legal Council of Chicago announced Thursday.

On December 2, Judge Suzanne B. Conlon of the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois entered a final judgment against the company in Doe v. Mutual of Omaha.

(ATLANTA, November 23, 1998) -- Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund Monday helped defeat the Georgia sodomy statute, in a victory for the right to privacy under the state's Constitution and against a notorious national symbol of anti-gay hostility and discrimination.

Lambda Takes on Texas Anti-Gay Sodomy Law

(NEW YORK, November 20, 1998) -- Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund said outside a Houston court Friday that it will challenge the Texas "Homosexual Conduct" law in defense of two men arrested in a private home on charges of engaging in consensual sex.


Lambda Staff Attorney Suzanne B. Goldberg, after the arraignment hearing in The State of Texas v. Lawrence and The State of Texas v. Garner, said that the national organization for lesbian and gay civil rights will seek to strike down the Texas sodomy law that the men are charged with violating.

Gay and Straight Students Seek Injunction Against Salt Lake School Board

(NEW YORK, November 13, 1998) -- In a Utah federal court, an alliance of gay and straight students seeking equal treatment at their school will ask for a preliminary injunction against the Salt Lake City school board, Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund said Friday.

Lambda, as lead counsel, the American Civil Liberties Union of Utah, the American Civil Liberties Union of Northern California, and the National Center for Lesbian Rights sued the school board on behalf of the East High Gay/Straight Alliance (GSA) and three of its members.

Ohio Court to Hear Lesbian Second-Parent Adoption Case

(CHICAGO, November 9, 1998) An Ohio appellate court is set to consider its first lesbian second-parent adoption case, which could provide better protections for an eight-year-old girl and eventually for children of many other lesbian and gay parents, Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund said Monday.

On Tuesday, November 10, the Ohio Court of Appeals will hear arguments in In re: Adoption of Jane Doe. Patricia Logue, managing attorney of Lambda's Midwest Regional Office, will argue on behalf of the mothers, "Trish Smith" and "Marcia Jones."

Hawaii, Alaska Election Results Dont Stop Freedom to Marry Movement

(NEW YORK, November 4, 1998) — Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund on Wednesday said it is disappointed but not defeated by Hawaii voters' approval of an unprecedented constitutional amendment aimed at blocking lesbian and gay couples from civil marriage. A similar measure was also approved in Alaska.
