Lambda Legal today announced that Demoya Gordon has joined the organization as a new staff and Transgender Rights Project attorney, based in its National Headquarters in New York.

Jon W. Davidson, Legal Director of Lambda Legal, said:

We are delighted to welcome Demoya to Lambda Legal. She has impressive legal experience and a demonstrated passion for advocacy on behalf of LGBT and allied communities. As the newest addition to our Transgender Rights Project, Demoya will add even greater firepower to our efforts.

Before joining Lambda Legal, Gordon worked as a litigation associate at Faegre Baker Daniels LLP in Minneapolis, Minnesota, where she maintained an active pro bono practice working on cases aimed at advancing LGBT rights and the rights of women, children, immigrants and others.

In recognition of her professional achievements and devotion to LGBT causes, the National LGBT Bar Association named Gordon one of 2014’s Best LGBT Attorneys under 40. In 2013, Lawyers of Color included Gordon on its annual Hot List, which recognizes 100 exceptional early- to mid-career minority attorneys under the age of 40. The Minnesota State Bar Association also recognized Gordon for donating a significant number of hours to pro bono work in both 2013 and 2014.

Gordon received her J.D. from the University of California, Berkeley. While in law school, Gordon authored a California Law Review article entitled Transgender Legal Advocacy: What Do Feminist Legal Theories Have to Offer? Gordon also served as submissions and projects editor for the Berkeley Journal of Gender Law and Justice and symposium editor for the Berkeley Journal of African American Law and Policy.

Gordon said:

I am honored to join Lambda Legal at such a critical time in civil rights history. The organization has been central to LGBT advocacy for decades and the legal team is highly accomplished. I am thrilled to contribute my skills here to further securing equal rights for transgender people, as well as lesbians, gay men, bisexuals and those living with HIV.

Dru Levasseur, Director of Lambda Legal’s Transgender Rights Project, said:

Demoya brings a wealth of knowledge and resources to our Transgender Rights Project. She will definitely add a new and exciting dimension to our work.

While currently a member of the Minnesota State Bar, Gordon is working towards admission in New York.
