Kaitlyn Gentile is the Project Coordinator for Lambda Legal’s Youth in Out-of-Home Care Project, which advocates, litigates, and advances policy reform on behalf of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer/questioning (LGBTQ) youth in foster, juvenile justice and homeless systems of care. Studies have long shown that LGBTQ youth are overrepresented in these systems, but they frequently face mistreatment and abuse while in care. Lambda Legal works on behalf of individual youth, as well as potential foster and adoptive parents, who have experienced discrimination based on their sexual orientation or gender identity or expression during their involvement with these systems. We also partner with community organizations and government agencies across the country to offer training and resources for legal and child welfare professionals, giving them the tools they need to provide affirming and competent services for all youth. Kaitlyn drafts and edits educational resources and web content about the rights of LGBTQ youth in care, for use by youth as well as advocates, attorneys, caregivers and administrators working with these populations. She also handles the day-to-day aspects of the project and assists the Project Director and the Director of Constitutional Litigation.

If you would like to be included on an email listserv that provides information about legal and social science updates affecting LGBTQ youth in care, please email Kaitlyn.
