Elissa Jeffers is a Legal Assistant based in the Midwest Regional Office of Lambda Legal, the nation’s oldest and largest legal organization dedicated to securing the full civil rights of the lesbians, gay men, bisexuals, transgender (“LGBT”) people, and everyone living with HIV. She assists regional and national attorneys in matters spanning all aspects of Lambda Legal’s impact litigation, policy advocacy, and public education efforts.

Jeffers supported legal teams in litigation seeking recognition and respect for relationships of same-sex couples and their children. For example, Jeffers assisted in ensuring accurate two-parent birth certificates for the marital children of same-sex couples in Wisconsin. She has also participated in litigation seeking accurate identity documents for transgender people and challenging policies banning current and aspiring service members from military service based on their transgender status.

Jeffers has worked on numerous briefs before federal appellate courts, with particular expertise in briefing before the Supreme Court of the United States. Her work is often focused on combating attempts to exclude LGBT people from public life, including cases involving religious justifications for discrimination. She is responsible for tracking litigation and policy developments, in particular attempts by the current administration to roll back the recent significant civil rights advancements made on behalf of LGBT people.

Jeffers has also worked on Lambda Legal’s Help Desk, providing resources and information for callers from across the Midwest, and overseeing regional Help Desk volunteers.

Prior to joining Lambda Legal, Jeffers was a Legal Assistant at the Environmental Law & Policy Center, where she focused on clean energy policy advocacy and litigation. She also worked as a Legal Assistant with Langacker Law, Ltd. in Urbana, Illinois, where she primarily worked on plaintiff-side employment discrimination litigation.

Jeffers holds a B.A. in Philosophy, with Distinction, from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign.
