The Accounting Manager of Lambda Legal is based in our New York Headquarters (HDQ) and is responsible for developing and maintaining accounting principles, practices and procedures to assist the Director of Finance in accurate and timely financial statements.

Who We Are

Lambda Legal is a national organization committed to achieving full recognition of the civil rights of lesbians, gay men, bisexuals, transgender people and everyone living with HIV through impact litigation, education and public policy work.

Since 1973, Lambda Legal has used impact litigation and other advocacy tools to decriminalize same-sex relationships, fight HIV discrimination, win marriage equality, and advance the rights of transgender people. Contributions from supporters nationwide enable a growing budget of approximately $19M. Clients are not charged for legal representation or advocacy and Lambda Legal receives no government funding. Headquartered in New York City, Lambda Legal has regional offices in Los Angeles, Chicago, Atlanta, Dallas, and Washington, DC.

Responsibilities

Reporting to the Director of Finance, the Accounting Manager requires a “roll up your sleeves” attitude and eye for attention to detail for all financial reporting.  The following is a list of the core responsibilities for the Accounting Manager, however other duties may be assigned.

  • Partner with various cross-functional teams across Lambda Legal (Development, Legal, Communications and the Regions) to obtain an adequate understanding of Lambda to ensure proper accounting and reporting.
  • Obtain and maintain a thorough understanding of the financial reporting and general ledger structure and requirements of the organization.
  • Oversee preparation of management reports for periodic financial review, including relevant fluctuation and variance analysis.
  • Review account reconciliations and perform an analytical review of Lambda Legal’s financial statements.
  • Ensure an accurate and timely monthly and year-end income reconciliation with the Database.
  • Ensure the timely reporting of all monthly actual to budget expense reporting.
  • Assist the Director of Finance in approving expense report coding and supporting documentation.
  • Support the Director of Finance with budget and forecasting activities.
  • Monitor and analyze accounting department work to develop and implement more efficient procedures and use of resources while maintaining a high level of accuracy.
  • Work with the Director of Finance to research the accounting treatment and reporting requirements of non-routine transactions.
  • Respond to inquiries from the Chief Operating Officer, Director of Finance and other staff regarding financial reporting and special reporting requests.
  • Work with the Director of Finance to ensure a clean and timely year-end audit.
  • Supervise the staff accountant to ensure all financial deadlines are met.
  • Provide training to new and existing accounting department staff as needed.
  • Collaborate with the Director of Finance to support overall department goals and objectives.
  • Support the Director of Finance with special projects and workflow process improvements.

Qualifications

  • B.S. in accounting (or B.S./B.A. in business with an accounting concentration) required
  • 5-7 years of progressively more responsible accounting experience preferably in a non-profit environment
  • Highly proficient with Microsoft Office applications, especially Excel, as well as at least one automated accounting system
  • Ability to multi-task, work under pressure and meet deadlines required
