Amber Hatcher is a sophomore at DeSoto County High School in Arcadia, Fla. She was suspended last year for participating in GLSEN’s National Day of Silence, because school officials say that peaceful protests – even protesting the bullying of LGBT students – are against school district policy.
That’s wrong and unfair. Silent protests are protected by the U.S. Constitution. That’s why Lambda Legal is suing the school to defend Amber’s right to participate in this year’s Day of Silence on April 19, 2013.
Day of Silence protests are especially important, because they call attention to the damaging effects of anti-LGBTQ bullying and harassment in schools.
Sign our pledge to support Amber – and the right of all students – to express themselves freely in school, and to take a stand against bullying and harassment.
