  • 1997 Anti-marriage bill adopted. In response to anti-gay right-wing group’s petitions to force an anti-gay anti-marriage initiative onto the November 1997 ballot, the legislature adopted the discriminatory legislation. Gov. King refused to sign the bill, blasting it as unconstitutional and wrong, but allowing it to become law for the time being rather than permit a referendum. See Maine Revised Statutes, Title 19 § 701-5.
