Same-Sex Couples Appeal to California Supreme Court in Marriage Case

(San Francisco, California, November 13, 2006) — Today, attorneys representing same-sex couples, Equality California, and Our Family Coalition are asking the California Supreme Court to decide whether barring same-sex couples from marriage violates the California Constitution.

Antigay Campaigns Dont Get the Vote

Kevin Cathcart, Executive Director of Lambda Legal, issued the following statement in response to the 2006 election results and what they mean for the LGBT community:

There is much to celebrate and analyze about the results of the elections, but one thing is for sure — antigay campaigns don’t work. The downfall of homophobic politicians like Rick Santorum and the defeat of the antigay constitutional amendment in Arizona signal that the tide is turning. The politics of harm and spite no longer carry the day for those who oppose LGBT equality.

New Jersey Supreme Court Directs State Legislature to Give Equal Rights to Same-sex Couples

(Trenton, New Jersey, October 25, 2006) — The New Jersey Supreme Court unanimously agreed today in Lambda Legal’s lawsuit that denying same-sex couples from the rights and benefits different-sex couples obtain through marriage is unconstitutional, and by a 4 – 3 split opinion, referred the matter to the state legislature to fix the inequality.

Divided California Court of Appeal Rejects Challenge to Discriminatory Marriage Law

Lambda Legal to File Sexual Orientation Discrimination Charge Against Bremen School Board and Board President on Behalf of Gay Superintendent

(Chicago, October 2, 2006) — In a letter sent to lawyers for the Bremen Community School Board today, Lambda Legal announced its intent to file a sexual orientation discrimination charge with the Illinois Department of Human Rights against the Bremen Community High School District No. 228 and its president, Evelyn Gleason.

Lambda Legal Seeks Justice for Gay Man Who Was Beaten

(Platteville, Wisconsin, September 28, 2006) — In court papers filed today, Lambda Legal seeks recovery for damages suffered by Brett Timmerman after he was attacked because he is gay.


“Mr. Timmerman was singled out and beaten by his attackers because he is gay,” said James P. Madigan, Staff Attorney in Lambda Legal’s Midwest Regional Office in Chicago. “He suffered physical as well as emotional injury and has shouldered significant expense in the aftermath of the attack.”
