“It all started for us right here in New York City and we’re excited to celebrate our 40th anniversary at Chelsea Piers on Monday.”
May 1, 2013

(New York, May 2, 2013) — Mayor Michael Bloomberg has proclaimed, May 6, 2013  Lambda Legal Day in honor of the organization’s 40th anniversary which will be celebrated at its annual gala that evening.

“Because New York City is our founding city and is the home of our headquarters office, we are honored to be recognized by Mayor Bloomberg and the City of New York,” said Kevin Cathcart, Executive Director of Lambda Legal. “It all started for us right here in New York City and we’re excited to celebrate our 40th anniversary at Chelsea Piers on Monday.”

The Proclamation reads in part:

“WHEREAS When Lambda Legal was founded in 1973, it became its own first client after its application for non-profit status was unjustly denied.  Founder Bill Thom successfully convinced New York state’s highest court to overturn the decision, and over the succeeding four decades, Lambda Legal has won many more historic victories. It has prevailed in cases that made it illegal to discriminate against people with HIV, held schools responsible for violence against LGBTQ students, overturned all remaining state sodomy laws, and challenged the constitutionality of bans on same-sex marriage.

“WHEREAS Today, Lambda Legal continues to move America down the path toward a more perfect union, taking on cases that advance the rights of LGBT people and those with HIV, leading public education campaigns, and advocating for changes in public policy.  As a city that celebrates its freedom and openness, we are proud to be the home of this outstanding organization – and together, we can expect to ensure a brighter, more equal future for all New Yorkers.

“Now therefore, I, Michael R. Bloomberg, Mayor of the City of New York, do hereby proclaim Monday, May 6th, 2013 in the City of New York as:

“Lambda Legal Day”
