Forums to Focus on Preserving Fair and Impartial Courts in the Wake of Last Year's Ouster of Three Iowa Supreme Court Judges
October 26, 2011

(Des Moines and Iowa City, IA, October 26, 2011) - Lambda Legal, along with several Iowa-based legal organizations, will host two forums on how best to preserve a fair and impartial judiciary after last year's ouster of three Iowa Supreme Court justices. The events will take place at public libraries in Des Moines and Iowa City.

Meredith Palmer, Fair Courts Project Manager for Lambda Legal, will talk about how the LGBT community relies on a fair and impartial court system to protect its civil rights - whether combating discrimination in the workplace and in our schools, accessing health care, or securing marriage equality.

WHO: Lambda Legal, ACLU of Iowa and One Iowa

WHAT: Panel and debate exploring the continuing controversies over how to best secure a fair and impartial judiciary

WHERE/WHEN: Wednesday, October 26, 2011 4:30-7:30PM at the Des Moines Public Library, 1000 Grand Des Moines, IA 50309 and Thursday, October 27, 2011 5:30-8:30PM at the Iowa City Public Library, 123 South Linn St., Iowa City, IA 52240

Each event will include three areas of discussion: 1) legislative officials and journalists will discuss legislative responses (i.e. impeachment of judges) to the courts and the media coverage of these attacks; 2) judges will provide their perspective on how to respond to attacks, the restrictions and ethical limitations imposed on them in their response, and ways judges can proactively interact with the community before attacks happen; and 3) community members will share their perspectives about what fair and impartial courts mean to their community and ways to further engage their community in these issues.
