Respected litigator Jack Senterfitt brings a wealth of experience as Lambda Legal Senior Staff Attorney
April 8, 2004

(Atlanta, April 8, 2004) — Lambda Legal announced today that Jack Senterfitt, a widely respected litigator and former chief lawyer for the Georgia Department of Human Resources, has joined the staff of its Southern Regional Office in Atlanta as a Senior Staff Attorney.

Senterfitt will work on a variety of cases in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia.

“We are delighted that Jack is putting his expertise and energy to work on behalf of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered people and those with HIV throughout the South,” said Gary Buseck, Legal Director at Lambda Legal. “Jack is a leader in the local legal community, and our work for full equality will benefit tremendously from his experience.”

As Assistant Commissioner and Chief Legal Officer for DHR, Senterfitt was responsible for managing all legal affairs for the state's social service agency. Prior to that, he spent over 27 years with Alston & Bird, a major law firm headquartered in Atlanta, where he was the leader of the railroad litigation group. He also helped develop the firm's domestic partnership benefits program and was instrumental in amending the firm's non-discrimination policy to include sexual orientation. While at the law firm, Senterfitt volunteered his time and legal expertise to AID Atlanta's Board of Directors, Atlanta Legal Aid Society, AIDS Legal Project, Habitat for Humanity and other local groups. He has been active in the Atlanta Bar Association and serves on the board of the Stonewall Bar Association.

A graduate of Vanderbilt University School of Law in 1974, he was on the Vanderbilt Law Review and received the International Barristers Association Award for Trial Techniques.

“I firmly believe in full equality for LGBT people. My wife and I have been married for 35 years and have three wonderful children together. I can't think of one reason under the sun why gay men and lesbians should be barred from the rights, responsibilities and benefits my family and I enjoy in all aspects of life,” Senterfitt said.
