Whether it's in the hallways at school or in out-of-home care settings, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning (LGBTQ) youth are at risk for harassment, bullying and discrimination and are too often neglected and unprotected by the institutions responsible for their care. Through our Youth in Out-Of-Home Care Project and through advocacy on behalf of youth in schools, Lambda Legal works to ensure that all LGBTQ young people can be safe, respected and free from discrimination and harassment.

Lambda Legal Applauds Eleventh Circuit Decision Upholding Curriculum Attacked by Antigay Group
On Friday, the United States Court of Appeals for the 11th Circuit upheld a lower court’s ruling against Jennifer Keeton, a graduate student in counseling at Augusta State University. Ms. Keeton expressed intent to engage in discriminatory and harmful professional practices when working with LGBT students as a school counselor. Keeton claimed her first amendment rights were violated when the school required her to complete a remediation program to better understand LGBT issues.

Federal Agency to Support Lambda Legal/CWLA Guidelines for LGBTQ Youth in Foster Care
Lambda Legal and the Child Welfare League of America (CWLA) released "Recommended Practice Guidelines to Promote the Safety and Well-Being of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Questioning (LGBTQ) Youth and Youth at Risk of or Living with HIV in Child Welfare Settings." The guide includes national practice guidelines for state and local child welfare agencies to ensure safe and proper care consistent with the best interests LGBTQ children in the child welfare system.

U.S. Supreme Court Denies Lambda Legal Appeal of Louisiana Birth Certificate Ruling
(Washington, DC, October 11, 2011) – The U.S. Supreme Court today denied Lambda Legal’s petition for a writ of certiorari in the case of a same-sex couple seeking an accurate birth certificate for their Louisiana-born son whom they adopted in New York. The Louisiana state registrar has refused to recognize the adoption and issue a birth certificate listing both fathers as the boy’s parents.

Idaho School District's Proposed School Club Policy Still Harmful to LGBT Students
(Los Angeles, September 13, 2011) - After receiving a letter from Lambda Legal and the Idaho Safe Schools Coalition, Joint School District No. 2 in Meridian, Idaho has amended a policy regarding student clubs, but the revised policy still harms lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) students and violates their rights.
