The modern LGBT rights movement is often considered to have begun with the community’s response to the police assault on LGBT patrons of the Stonewall Inn in 1969. To this day, law enforcement officials continue to target LGBT and HIV-positive people for abuse, utilizing the power of the police and criminal justice system. Lambda Legal has a proud history of standing up to such misconduct, challenging criminal laws directed at or disproportionately applied against members of our community, and seeking recourse when legal authorities violate the rights of LGBT and HIV-positive people. We also challenge government actions that fund, support or facilitate discrimination.
