The New Black
The New Black is a documentary that tells the story of the historic fight to win marriage equality in Maryland through the eyes, hearts and minds of members of the African American community, and charts the evolution of this issue within the black community. The film documents activists, families and clergy on both sides of the campaign to legalize same-sex marriage, examines homophobia in the black community’s institutional pillar—the black church and reveals the Christian right wing’s strategy of exploiting this phenomenon in order to pursue an anti-gay political agenda.
The New Black takes viewers into the pews, onto the streets and provides a seat at the kitchen table as community members grapple with questions about rights for same-sex couples.
As a part of Lambda Legal’s efforts to achieve legal equality for LGBT people and to change hearts and minds in our communities, we invite you to view the film and meet one of the cast members.
The New Black has been nominated for the NAACP Image Award for Best Documentary & the GLAAD Media Award for Outstanding Documentary.
