(New York, March 27, 2012) - Flor Bermudez, Youth in Out of Home Care Staff Attorney at Lambda Legal, has been named a recipient of the Hispanic National Bar Association's (HNBA) 2012 Top Lawyers Under Forty Award. Bermudez was honored along with five other attorneys who are accomplished HNBA members under the age of 40 who have distinguished themselves as young Hispanic lawyers in the legal profession nationwide.

Bermudez joined the staff of Lambda Legal in 2007 where she advocates for adequate treatment and competent, sensitive and informed services for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning youth who are involved with child welfare, juvenile justice and homeless services systems. Recently, Bermudez was co-counsel in L.P. v. City of Philadelphia, representing a transgender girl subjected to verbal and physical abuse because of her sexual orientation, gender identity, sex and disability while in the custody of a Philadelphia secure youth detention facility. Bermudez filed a civil rights complaint with the City of Philadelphia Commission on Human Relations and won a settlement on behalf of L.P. that requires new policies and trainings in the youth detention facility.

"Flor Bermudez is an incredibly accomplished lawyer and fierce advocate for LGBTQ youth who are too-commonly rejected by their families, peers, schools and other institutions," said Jon Davidson, Legal Director. "We're thrilled that the Hispanic National Bar Association has recognized her years of hard work and dedication."

Prior to joining Lambda Legal, Bermudez spent four years at Esperanza del Barrio as the founding executive director and staff attorney. Bermudez has been a Skadden Public Interest Fellow staff attorney at Mothers on the Move and the Urban Justice Center and she has also worked as a union organizer for the United Farm Workers and as an ESL Teacher for UNITE. Bermudez is a graduate of Rutgers University and Rutgers School of Law. After receiving her law degree, Bermudez clerked for New Jersey Supreme Court Justice Gary Stein. She is originally from Mexico.
