The City Council of the City of Los Angeles has proclaimed June 13, 2013 Lambda Legal Day, in honor of the organization’s 40th anniversary, which will be celebrated at the West Coast Liberty Awards this evening. From the Resolution:

WHEREAS, in 2008 Lambda Legal played a crucial role in overturning California's Proposition 22 which restricted marriages to only those between opposite-sex couples, in the California State Supreme Court; and

WHEREAS, as a result of Lambda Legal's efforts, the first same-sex marriage in the City of Los Angeles was performed by Mayor-Elect Eric Garcetti on June 17, 2008;

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that by the adoption of this resolution the City Council of the City of Los Angeles does hereby declare June 13, 2013 as Lambda Legal Day in the City of Los Angeles and congratulate Lambda Legal on their 40th Anniversary.

Last monthNew York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg proclaimed May 6, 2013 Lambda Legal Day in New York City.

Lambda Legal will host the West Coast Liberty Awards tonight, June 13, 2013, at the London West Hollywood Hotel. The West Coast Liberty Awards is an annual opportunity for Lambda Legal to recognize and thank individuals and organizations whose public advocacy and work has furthered the cause of Lambda Legal’s vision of equality.

At the West Coast Liberty Awards, Lambda Legal is pleased to honor The New Normal's Justin Bartha, The Magic Johnson Foundation, Community Leader Eric Webber and Brendon Ayanbadejo.
