Good News About the Boy Scouts—Or Is It?

Having worked on trying to get the Boy Scouts to end its discriminatory policies for 25 years, I am torn by today's vote by Scouting to no longer kick out gay youth. 

Sparing even one gay boy the harm of being tossed aside due to his sexual orientation is something to be happy about, and some thought no change would ever happen. 

But maintaining the ban on openly gay adults will lead to the youth who do come out being ejected when they turn 18. It also continues to send the damaging message to all youth in the program that there is something the matter with being gay, and tells gay youth to live in secrecy if they have any thoughts about staying involved in the organization once they turn 18.

So, is it progress? I'm not sure.
