Lambda Legal scored many amazing victories this year in the fight for the rights of LGBT people and people living with HIV and now has a docket of 110 cases nationwide.
We defended the free-speech rights of a student in Florida, secured survivor benefits for a 93-year-old transgender widow in New York, and defeated a draconian HIV-criminalization law in Iowa — all this in a year that saw the number of marriage equality states rise from 18 to 35, including victories in our marriage cases in Arizona, Indiana, Nevada, South Carolina, Virginia and West Virginia.
Three of these cases — in Indiana, Nevada and Virginia — led to circuit court decisions that brought equal marriage in multiple states, extending our impact across the country.
These are advances we would barely have dreamed of just a decade ago — but we’re not done yet.
Even as we celebrate our recent victories, the reality for many people in LGBT and HIV-affected communities is sobering.
More than half of states lack explicit antidiscrimination laws to protect LGBT workers. Millions of LGBT Americans still live in states that lack marriage equality. LGBT seniors are still being denied survivor benefits, LGBT youth are still being harmed in the foster care and juvenile justice systems, LGBT immigrants are still being discriminated against, and LGBT inmates still live without basic protections from rape and assault.
Our well-funded opponents, including the misleadingly named Alliance Defending Freedom and American Center for Law and Justice, along with prominent elected officials, continue their vicious efforts to halt our progress and turn back equality. Lambda Legal will keep fighting back--- and winning---in the courts, in communities around the country, and in the court of public opinion.
