Francisco Dueñas is the national Proyecto Igualdad Coordinator located in the Western Regional Office of Lambda Legal, the oldest and largest national legal organization committed to achieving full recognition of the civil rights of lesbians, gay men, bisexuals, transgender people and people with HIV.
Dueñas is responsible for coordinating Lambda Legal´s various educational and advocacy outreach efforts to the many Latino communities in the US – Proyecto Igualdad. Besides informing Latinos about Lambda Legal's cases and about the rights of LGBT people and people living with HIV, he also helps create and implement Latino-specific public education campaigns aimed at engaging the Latino public in our cases and in the expansion of civil rights for LGBT people and people with HIV. Dueñas also reports back to Lambda Legal on the needs across the country of LGBT Latinos and Latinos living with HIV. He has been with Lambda Legal since 2004.
Prior to joining Lambda Legal, Dueñas worked as a community and political organizer with Los Angeles ACORN (The Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now), organizing low to moderate-income residents of South Los Angeles. He was also an AmeriCorps VISTA member, working at the L.A. Gay and Lesbian Center's Safe Haven Project, organizing LGBTQ youth against antigay violence in three L.A. Unified School District high schools. He most recently served as a commissioner on the city of Los Angeles’ Human Relations Commission.
