Ben Leal is an Outreach Associate in the South Central Regional Office of Lambda Legal, the oldest and largest national legal organization committed to achieving full recognition of the civil rights of lesbians, gay men, bisexuals, transgender people and people with HIV. He is responsible for informing communities about Lambda Legal's cases and the rights of LGBT people and those with HIV.
Prior to joining Lambda Legal, Leal served as a legislative assistant with the Governor's Office for the State of Texas after having served as legislative director for Representative Gabi Canales in the Texas House of Representatives. Leal's previous non-profit work experiences include time at Texas Standing Tall, a statewide coalition to prevent underage drinking, and Crime Prevention Institute, a support service to reduce recidivism rates for incarcerated individuals.
Leal's volunteerism has included Equality Texas, formerly Lesbian Gay Rights Lobby of Texas (LGRL), and Aids Service of Austin and Equality Texas. Leal has also participated in Capitol visits for the American Cancer Society as a volunteer. In his spare time Leal also volunteers for local campaigns.
Leal was born and raised in San Antonio, Texas and has been residing in Austin, Texas for the past six years. He graduated from Texas Lutheran University with a major in Political Science and a concentration in Public Policy and Urban Development.
