Lambda Legal's law reform, policy, and education work encompasses a wide range of areas, including federal and state constitutional law issues; discrimination in employment, benefits, housing, insurance, schools, foster care, and juvenile detention, and other areas; harassment and violence; anti-gay ballot initiatives; access to healthcare and HIV-related treatments; child custody, visitation and adoption; relationship protections, including the freedom to marry; discrimination based upon gender identity and sex-stereotyping.  Lambda Legal has been involved in many recent Supreme Court cases, including Lawrence v. Texas, Morse v. Frederick, Garrett v. University of Alabama Board of Trustees, Dale v. Boy Scouts of America, Troxel v. Granville, Romer v. Evans, and Board of Regents of University of Wisconsin v. Southworth.

The legal assistant will help serve the states in the National Headquarters region (including Connecticut, Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania as well as the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico) and increase Lambda Legal's presence as a force for civil rights there.  In addition to the production of legal briefs and cite-checking, Legal Assistants are tasked with non-legal research, maintaining files and other organizational systems, drafting correspondence, telephone calls to courts and other attorneys, and general administrative support to the legal department.

Qualifications

The successful applicant will possess good oral and written communication skills and be motivated, detail-oriented, well-organized, self-starting, computer-literate (Microsoft Word; Excel and Powerpoint PowerPoint helpful) and interested in lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and HIV-related legal issues.  Familiarity with legal secretarial or support work is helpful; a willingness to learn specialized legal document production skills is essential. Prior work on behalf of the LGBT community and/or persons with HIV is a plus.  A minimum two-year commitment is required.
