Lambda Legal seeks a Staff Attorney to engage in public policy advocacy, education, and cutting-edge impact litigation in its new office in Washington, DC.

Lambda Legal will hire a highly motivated and committed lawyer to help us lead the resistance to any retrenchment proposed by Congress and the new administration, and capitalize on every opportunity to advance liberty, equality, dignity and justice under the law. Now more than ever, Lambda Legal will protect and defend LGBT people and everyone living with HIV, and will partner with peer organizations across movements to safeguard our communities’ increasingly-threatened civil rights.
Responsibilities: This attorney will focus primarily on federal policy advocacy, which will include analysis of legislative and administrative policy proposals; preparation and coordination of comments on proposed legislation and regulations; advocacy with Executive and Legislative branch officials; and other forms of advocacy in diverse settings. This attorney will regularly represent Lambda Legal at coalition meetings, and will advise the Director of Strategy on how best to deploy Lambda Legal resources in support of such coalition efforts.
This attorney will also have a litigation portfolio that will vary over time, and may include directly representing Lambda Legal clients in trial and appellate litigation, writing amicus briefs, organizing amicus strategies, working with co-counsel from other organizations, and investigating and developing potential new matters.
Finally, this attorney will engage in public speaking, write for a variety of audiences, and help implement education strategies to advance public knowledge about sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, and HIV-related legal issues.
Some travel may be required.
Qualifications: The ideal candidate will have four to seven years of experience as a practicing attorney, and will have both legislative lawyering / policy advocacy and litigation experience. The attorney should possess a high level of independence and initiative, good judgment, excellent speaking and writing skills, the ability to produce the highest-caliber legal work under demanding deadlines, creativity, and a willingness to work collaboratively with others toward the most effective strategies and initiatives to advance civil rights. In addition, the attorney must have the ability to talk about legal and other complex issues in clear, persuasive terms for non-lawyer audiences.
Demonstrated awareness of and commitment to the concerns of the breadth of the communities that Lambda Legal serves is essential. Prior work on behalf of the LGBT community and/or people living with HIV is highly desirable, as is fluency in Spanish and/or other languages in addition to English.
