Jobs: Community Education and Advocacy Intern

Chicago, Dallas, Los Angeles, New York

Lambda Legal seeks law school and college students for internships. This is an opportunity for students to gain hands-on experience in development, community outreach and education at a national nonprofit organization specializing in lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and HIV civil rights law.

Lambda Legal is a national organization committed to achieving full recognition of the civil rights of lesbians, gay men, bisexuals, transgender people and those with HIV through impact litigation, education and public policy work.

Lambda Legal provides a pleasant, collegial environment for students interested in law, LGBT issues, civil rights, public affairs and/or nonprofit workplaces. The office offers interns the opportunity to gain experience in a wide variety of disciplines in a dynamic workplace. The schedule is flexible; however interns should be able to work in the office 12-24 hours per week during office hours, Monday through Friday. The internship is unpaid; however course credit and externship status are available. Interns are strongly encouraged to seek out and apply for grants, scholarships or funding from other sources.

Responsibilities

The intern will be responsible for a variety of tasks including, but not limited to: event planning and execution; correspondence with donors, volunteers and others; community outreach; public education; conducting online research on a variety of topics; and various administrative tasks, including telephone coverage and data entry. The intern's specific responsibilities will vary for the duration of the term depending on the needs of the office. An intern, however, is also welcome to focus on areas in which she/he is particularly interested, subject to the needs of the office.

Qualifications

Interns will assist staff in combating all forms of LGBT and HIV discrimination. Thus, a background in, or familiarity with, related issues, legal or otherwise, will greatly strengthen the application.

Candidates for the internship should have a strong commitment to social justice, equality and civil rights issues, particularly those involving the LGBT and HIV-affected communities. Strong organizational skills are a must. Additionally, a desire to learn, strong communication, analytical skills and the ability to be a team player are a plus. An ideal candidate will also possess the ability to self-motivate, work with varying levels of supervision and adapt to a variety of tasks.
